The Phantom of the Opera Slots

From the original novel by Gaston Leroux to depictions on film and the highly successful 1986 musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, The Phantom of the Opera is a popular and enduring tale. Part romance, part horror, the story tells of an opera house that many people believe to be haunted, and the disfigured man – the titular character – who lives below the building and has fallen in love with a young singer.

With such a long history and widespread acclaim, it is little surprise that someone would make an online slot machine from this tale. The Phantom of the Opera by NetEnt is specifically based on Universal Studios’ 1943 horror film, part of the long line of such movie the company made (many of which, including this one, are being relaunched as part of the studio’s “Dark Universe” line of films). Featuring several different stacked wilds and a host of special features, this is a game that fans of the story will definitely appreciate.

Listen to the Music

The Phantom of the Opera video slot features five reels and 40 paylines, and can be found at sites that feature software by NetEnt. Like most games created by this company, this is a fully mobile-optimized game, with a touch screen version that’s perfect for use on a tablet or mobile phone. As with most real money online slots, a play for free version is also available if you want to try before you buy.

At a very basic level, the object of this machine is to make matches of identical symbols across the reels, with wins available in both directions: either left-to-right or right-to-left will do on this title. The basic, low-value symbols that players can match are the four playing card suits: spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts, all of which are designed to look like broken mirrors. Larger payouts can be earned by matching daggers, mirrors, rings and flowers. The true high-paying icons belong to the two stars of the show: Christine and the Phantom himself. These symbols have the potential to show up in stacks that can cover as much as the entire reel.

A Wild Adventure

One of the more interesting things you’ll find in this game is the sheer number of different wild symbols you can run across during play. Conveniently, most of these come with a fancy gold trim that clearly marks them as being slightly different than the ordinary icons. These include masks (appearing in normal and stacked forms), as well as stacked versions of both the Phantom and Christine. The stacks can appear on either the first reel (the Phantom shows up here) or on the last (the mask and Christine).

These are really mini-stacks, as they only appear in groups of two. If you can manage to get both parts of one of these stacks on each of the first and last reels at the same time, however, you’ll be treated to one of a couple different bonus features. First, if you can get the Phantom and the mask on reels one and five, you’ll see all of these icons turned into masked Phantoms, and you’ll immediately earn a free respin with these (and any other wilds) remaining in place.

Stacks of Phantoms and Christine symbols will get you into the Pick and Click bonus. In this game, the player must first choose from a set of eight roses, revealing prizes of instant coins until they hit a blocker. Once that occurs, the mini-game moves to the second round, where there are three mirrors to pick from. The one the player picks will determine whether they get a 1x, 2x, or 3x multiplier on the coin win from the first part of the bonus.

Of course, there are also scatter symbols to be found. Hitting three of these will start a free spins game during which masked icons can appear on any reel. When one appears on a given reel, it will cut a rope holding a chandelier above the screen. Once all five ropes are cut (one for each reel), the free spins round will come to an end.

The Show Must Go On

If you’re a fan of the film this online slot is based on – or, really, any other incarnation of this tale – then we think you’ll have a lot of fun with this game. We truly enjoyed the way that different symbols could interact with each other in order to reward gamblers, and the fact that there are so many wilds adds a lot of volatility to the machine: you might go a long time without a win, but when they hit, they can come with big payouts. We think you’ll agree that this is one of the top new NetEnt releases, but if you’re not sure, you can test it yourself by playing the free Phantom of the Opera slot machine to see if it’s the right choice for you.
