Worms Slot Machine

Worms first appeared as a strategy game in 1995, an original idea where the player would control a platoon of worms across a landscape, whilst facing off against either other players or a computer controlled platoon. The game has seen many different editions over the years, starting out on the Commodore Amiga, moving onto PC gaming and now available on all major consoles. The game has been such a success that it has also spawned spin-offs, including golf, pinball and breakout versions of the game. Blueprint games have taken it one step further by introducing a Worms slot machine.

The look of the slot will be very familiar to anybody who has played the game, the title looking much like that of the game, with the trademark hand grenade forming the letter ‘O’ of worms. The background to the slot sees worms and ammunition being parachuted in, while the reels features worms in various battle poses, including pointing weapons, holding people up and looking inconspicuous in wooden boxes (if a worm in battle gear can appear inconspicuous in a wooden box). Each spin is met by a very appropriate war-type soundtrack, adding to the theme of the slot.

Classic Worms Action

When playing, you’ll notice a difference immediately in the fact that there are four symbols on each of the five reels, as opposed to the more standard three. This leads to the fact that you’ll find more win lines than usual here with 50, this number set in stone, as you’ll not be able to play fewer. The only choice you’ll make is the total stake for each spin, which rises in multiples of 50 due to the number of win lines.

To win you’ll need to land at least three consecutive symbols from left to right on a win line. The largest paying symbol is the stacked wild featuring one worm holding up another and should you land five in a row you’ll win 1000 coins. As the wild this symbol will substitute for all others (apart from the bonus symbol) to give additional wins when playing.

All of the other symbols containing the worms pay out between 250 and 200 coins when landing five in a row, while the remaining symbols at the slot are the playing cards from 9 to Ace.

There is one extra pay-out that you can win on the reels – a 50,000 coin pay-out in fact! This can be won if every one of the twenty symbols at the slot is a wild. This is obviously difficult to achieve, but it can be done.

What's Inside the Crate?

The feature is activated when landing the bonus symbol three or more times on the reels – this symbol represented by the worm hiding in the crate. You’ll now select one of the crates, which will take you to one of the following three bonus games:

The free spins battle sees you given a health meter. If you land the ‘Pirate Worm’ on the middle reel, your health will decrease, but will be replenished by landing the ‘Medical Worm’ on the same reel. During this round you’ll win additional cash prizes if landing the army worm on the middle reel – the round coming to an end when your health meter reaches zero.

The Space Trail round sees you travel in space, the multipliers growing as you go. To proceed you’ll need to land the ‘advance’ symbol, but land on the bomb and your worm will come under attack. The feature will end when you are hit by the bomb! In this feature you can win up to 1,000x your total bet.

The final round is the ‘Crate Escape’. Once again you’ll have a health meter, but this time you’ll choose crates. If you reveal a weapon, your health is decreased and if you reveal a first aid kit, your health is replenished. You’ll continue once again until your health runs out – with a maximum win amount of up 100x your total bet size.

More than just Nostalgic Value

This slot has done a very good job of incorporating the central idea of the ‘Worms’ video game into a slot. Like the games, this slot has a good sense of humour and it also keeps you very involved throughout. The features are particularly good and with three different games, the slot will remain fresh for a good while. I'm a huge Worms fan and have been ever since the original game was released. This slot wasn't just a fun trip down memory lane; it was one of the better Blueprint Gaming slots I've tried. This slot is highly recommended.
