Symphomagic Slot

Here’s a slot machine that can be music to your ears. Symphomagic is a game that drums up winnings when symbols such as cymbals land across any of the ten paylines, with an adjacent pays format meaning that the lines can start and end on any of the five reels. This online and mobile optimised slot is based around a Jazz orchestra and has some Disney-type characters such as the smiling cello, grand piano and harp to pay out the top prizes.

The theme may be somewhat unique, but apart from the adjacent pays, the gameplay is very ordinary. It’s a basic slot machine that does away with bonus features and side games, although like all slots from the DLV studios, you have the option to gamble winnings. Choose to take the gamble and you could be doubling the value of a win over and over, but of course, lose the gamble and the prize is lost.

Now, call us fussy, but we really expected a slot based around musical instruments to have a soundtrack that at least hinted at the theme. But we’re sad to say that the Symphomagic video slot has a standard series of mechanical effects and annoying beeps accompanying the spins of the reels. It doesn’t really hit the right note with us, but putting that to one side, this is an otherwise appealing slot for players who like straightforward gameplay. A high return to player percentage, (RTP), guarantee of fair gaming and nicely-designed symbols should ensure that for many people, it’s a harmonious game.

Conducting the Symbols

A blue and purple background color palette helps the brass instruments to stand out in this good-looking game. The paytable outlines how the gameplay all works in symphony, but once you have grasped the Adjacent Pays concept, it’s a very easy slot.

All ten paylines are active, so all that you need to do is decide the coin value on each. Wins are expressed as multiples of the amount staked per line. The way that winning combinations are formed is a little unusual, as unlike most slots, the runs of matching symbols doesn’t need to start on any particular reel. If you land three of a kind across a line on reels two, three and four, or over reels three, four and five, it doesn’t matter. Symbols can be stacked several high on a reel, having the effect of making it somewhat easier to land winning lines of them.

The drum and cymbals pay out ten times, 25x, or 150x when seen on three, four, or all five reels across a payline. You collect prizes of 15x, 50x, or 200x the line stake when either the trombone and hat symbol, or horn appear across the reels, while the harp and cello are both valued at 30x, 150x, or 500x your per line stake.

The top-paying symbol is a grand piano. When this is seen on three, four, or all five reels across any payline, you claim prizes of 50x, 500x, or a huge 5,000x the line bet.

A Special Note

The Cleft symbol, which is the little squiggle at the start of a line of music, works differently to others. It’s a scatter symbol that pays in any places, even if it’s dotted around the reels in random positions. Three of them are worth 20x, four scatters pay out 100x and it’s a prize of 500x the per line stake awarded with any five or more scatters in view.

Double Your Money

At the end of any winning spin, a small picture of playing cards will become highlighted to the left of the reels, while the ‘Spin’ button will wait for you to decide if you want to collect the win or gamble it. Click the cards to enter a 50/50 card color guessing round, which sees the win doubled in value if you correctly click red or black buttons as a face-down card alternates between the colors.

It flashes so quickly that this round is more about luck than skill, but it’s a fun way to potentially multiply a prize. Get the timing correct and you can cash out the prize or try to double it again, or you can carry on until the high limit is reached, or you make a wrong pick and lose the lot.

Place Your Bets

DLV slot machines all use a very similar set of command buttons, which are simple to use. Coins per line can be set from just 0.01 to a maximum of 5.00, so it’s not really a game for high rollers and is perhaps more suited to low stakes gamblers.

There’s also the Autoplay button, which you use to set the game running on its own for any number of spins, although be sure to set win or loss limits before you activate this option. You can also decide to play the game on an iPad, iPhone, Windows, or Android device, desktop PC or Mac.

Other Musical Interludes

The Jazz slot from High 5 Games covers a similar topic, but with a few features added in. Free spins are a standard feature seen on many slots, but the Connect Wilds are an interesting addition. The wild symbol is made up of four piano keys, each with a letter on them, acting as others to complete combinations. When the left and right arrow symbols appear on the reels, both they and any symbols in between them get converted into extra wilds. Images of Jazz singers and a cool soundtrack bring the clubs of New Orleans right to your PC or mobile device.

Some funky tunes also accompany the spinning of the five reels in Playtech’s The Jazz Club slot. Neon-effect playing card symbols pay out the smaller prizes, with three musicians returning the top awards. The microphone is a wild symbol and when the free spins round is triggered, you get three choices. You can have ten bonus spins with all wins paid at the flat rate, 14 free spins with all wins doubled, or just seven spins with all payouts multiplied by four times. The wild symbol expands during this round, so whichever option you go for, there’s a greater chance of collecting some winnings.

In Tune With What Players Want?

In many ways, this is a pretty good slot machine. The symbols are nicely designed, with little animations playing out whenever each one creates a winning line for you. The Adjacent Pays format and stacked symbols means that those winnings can be seen quite frequently.

Basic gameplay, with no wild symbols, or side games, is a matter of preference. Some players love the simple pleasures of spinning the reels, while others like to see more bonus features. We’re disappointed by the lack of a jazzy soundtrack though, and DLV seem to have missed the opportunity to add some special tunes to this game.
