Baby dragons are the theme of this beautifully animated slot from Yggdrasil. The reel shape is unusual, with a 3-4-5-4-3 formation, rather than the usual 5x3 grid. Many of the symbols represent dragon eggs, with the dragons themselves playing a prominent role in the game. There are special wilds and a free spins game where you can accumulate the bigger wins.
The setting for this slot is a cave full of spiky rocks. At first glance, the symbols look like eggs and balls with different colours and textures. These come stacked and there will often be entire reels covered by a single symbol. In among the eggs are animated baby dragons (a blue one and a red one) which spit fire. Occasionally, one of these will expand into a visually impressive full sized dragon, which fills an entire reel with wilds.
The audio in the game features a mix of sounds. Firstly there is a mystical, edgy background tune. Secondly there a lot of ‘cute’ baby dragon purrs and coos – and last but not least there are some more dramatic musical sound effects when you get a winning combination.
There are 3 different types of wild symbol on the reels. The free spins round includes a lot more wilds than then main game – and includes an extra way to add to the number of spins.
The oval shaped reels mean that there are 40 win lines for this game. Unusually these lines go from either direction. 20 go from left to right and 20 from right to left. The game is very fast to highlight wins, so you will quickly tune in to how this works. The smallest coin value is 1c, meaning you can spin from as little as 40c (up to $40 for the high rollers out there). There are auto spin options, and you can control the sound and animations via the settings icon on the bottom left.
This game is based on multiple smaller wins with the different wild symbols – and so does not have one outsized winning combination on the reels. The red egg is the best symbol; this is worth 750 coins for 5, 170 for 4 and 25 for 3. The blue egg is worth 500 for 5, purple one 400 and glowing green one 300 coins for the full set. The round eggs, which are less bright, make up the smaller wins for this game.
Wild symbols come in three forms. There is a baby blue dragon which is the regular wild. This simply substitutes for any of the regular symbols (not the free spins logo). He starts off coloured, and will fall asleep and go dull if not involved in a win on any particular spin. There is a purple baby dragon, which mostly appears on the middle reel in normal play. This then expands to cover all 5 of the rows of symbols – often resulting in multiple wins. When you get more than one wild reel, you can expect an even bigger windfall. The red baby dragon is the 3rd type; this one spits balls of fire which randomly create more wilds (including purple ones) on the reels. If you are lucky enough to combine some of these types, you can get a lot of live winning combinations in one go.
Free spins fireball logos are the last symbol. 3 or more of these trigger the free spins game. With 5 you’ll get a huge 75 free spins, 4 gets you 20 and 3 triggers 10 spins.
Free spins does include more of the wild symbols, though other than the background to the reels turning into a purple colour, there is nothing too different about the game play. One unique feature is that you can now trigger more spins with just 2 of the fireball symbols – this gets you 2 extra spins each time. The larger amounts of spins can also be retriggered while you are playing this game. You will see a screen showing your total wins at the end of the bonus.
Baby dragons do not sound like the sort of theme I might enjoy, though I came away from this game very impressed. The regular game is fast and beautifully produced, if a little ‘cute’ in places with the different baby dragons. Increasing the appeal are all those wild possibilities, which can lead to the occasional bigger win. Free spins takes this game to a whole new level. It is not just the retriggers; the extra numbers of wilds can soon see your wins mounting up.
