Jekyll & Hyde is a new slot machine that is based on the 19th century novella by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. And it was a strange case indeed, because this story is centred on a respected gentleman of Victorian society who decided to dabble with some lotions and potions to satisfy his evil vices. As you can probably guess, this didn't end up well for anyone involved!

This take on the Gothic horror story is by Ash Gaming, who have created a game with all of the visual cues for a horror themed spinning adventure. The whole aesthetic is dark and mysterious, while a series of props and characters from the Victorian era help to send players back in time to the setting of the narrative. For example, there are symbols which depict an old diary, a top hat and cane as well as two female characters and a gentleman. The game's scatter icon is a vial of potion while the wild symbol is depicted as Dr. Jekyll himself, who has the potential to turn into his evil counterpart at any time...

The Dr. Jekyll wild character will appear throughout the base game of this slot machine on the second, third and fourth reels, helping to complete winning combinations by substituting for normal paying icons. However, this Jekyll icon will reveal its wilder side by expanding into a Mr. Hyde wild symbol which covers the entire reel, only if there is a winning combination available to be filled.

That isn't the only time during Jekyll & Hyde that players will be able to witness the duality of the slot machine's leading protagonist (or antagonist, depending on which way you look at it!). That is because there is a chance to choose between the two characters whenever the game's free spins feature is triggered by three or more scatters on the reels in any position. Players who opt for the Dr. Jekyll bonus will be able to steadily build up a multiplier value that is applied to all wins during the feature, with every additional potion scatter that appears on the fifth reel boosting the multiplier by 1x up to a maximum of 5x. If you choose to play with Mr. Hyde, then you will be treated to a bombardment of extra wilds with one of the character icons turning wild an additional scatter appears on the last reel.

If punters are feeling particularly risky, then they can boost their chances for a bonus round by playing the “Feature Bet”. This is essentially double your total bet value, but it will power up the scatters on the reels, turning the potion into a glowing red. And the change of colour is not the most exciting thing about this gameplay element, because these powered up potions will be valid to trigger the free spins feature even if they appear in one position above or below the reels.

Now that you know what this slot machine looks like and you are clued up about the various bonus elements, there is only one thing left to look at – the prize paying potential. With 25 paylines, players can expect to find a good balance between the frequency of wins and the size of prizes, the biggest of which will multiply the bet on the winning line by 1,000x.

That prize is paid whenever five matching gentleman symbols are found in a row on one of the paylines, while five lady in red symbols will award a 300x line bet multiplier and five lady in blue icons will also fetch 300x in line bet prizes. Both the top hat icon and diary will award wins of 150x while the generic playing card icons pay out a range of smaller line wins.

Jekyll & Hyde offers some satisfyingly interesting spins based on the original source material written by R. L. Stevenson. In fact, it seems as though the game creators at Ash Gaming have really thought about the game's bonus elements to emulate the themes of duality which are prevalent in the famous story, which is all the better for us spinners since we can choose whether to enjoy some exciting free spins with wild wins or growing multipliers.
