Dia de los Muertos Slot Machine

If you don’t speak Spanish, then you might be interested to know that the Oryx game Dia de los Muertos translates as the Day of the Dead.

A time of year which traditionally coincides with Halloween, the Dia de los Muertos is an occasion where relatives can remember loved ones who are departed and send them good vibes to help with their spiritual journey.

In this video slot you’ll be surrounded by a whole host of spooky paraphernalia as you spin the reels in a bid to win cash prizes online.

But will you be distracted by the eerie occasion? Here’s a review of Dia de los Muertos by Oryx with everything you need to know.

Sense of Occasion

Dia de los Muertos is a cultural occasion which has become popular all over the world but nowhere more so than where it originated, in Mexico.

And this game celebrates the occasion in all its glory, retaining a dignified yet joyous mood.

The background setting is beautiful with deep red flowers, photographs of the deceased and bowls of incense wafting their scent through the air.

In start contrast the game board is more about the dead than the living, with the reels composed of tombstones covered in moss. The effect isn’t unattractive though as there are rows of tiny, delicate flowers between each reel and molten candles flicker at the edges.

The symbols are a combination of the beautiful and the bizarre, with beautifully ornate lettering representing playing cards as well as a skeletal Mariachi band! other symbols include the cempazuchil flower, a sugar skull and a Beamish pumpkin.

Sadly there’s no accompanying music in the background but when you spin the reels you’ll hear an all-too-brief snatch of the Mariachi melodies which are so popular in Mexico.

Set up Your Play

Before you start playing on the reels, you’ll need to first set up your bet and you can do this using the buttons on the main screen.

Dia de los Muertos is played on 5 reels and with a maximum of 15 paylines. You can choose to play with as many or as few as you want out of this 15, using the onscreen controls to choose. There’s up to 10 coins which can be played per line with the value of each coin variable between the minimum of 0.01 and the maximum of 1.00.

This level of flexibility means that it’s possible to accommodate both low and high betters.

If you’re not sure which way to play, take a look at the paytable first. Knowing what prizes are ups for grabs can help you to determine how much to bet.

You can navigate to the paytable using the “info” button on the main screen and there you’ll find details of the payouts on offer. The higher value symbols provide a win for matching just two on an active payline while the lower symbols require a match of at least three.

More than Just Matches

Although matching symbols is the main aim of the game, there’s extras on the board which can really help to bump up your potential prizes.

Day of the Dead is one long celebration and to keep going, you’re going to need to eat! So in the Candy Skull Bonus you’ll be given the option of sating your appetite on sweets. Then once you’re full it’s onto the party where you can enjoy some traditional Mariachi music but wait! Before you head off, you’ll need to pick two venues to attend…

The venues you pick will determine how many free spins you get, with between 7 and 15 on offer and also the multiplier you qualify for too.

But you can’t receive these bonus games at any point during the game; to unlock them you’ll first need to land three or more special Mariachi symbols. The bonus game can’t be retriggered during the free spins so if you land the symbols during these turns you’ll be awarded a scatter instead.

Party as if You were Dead!

Dia de los Muertos from Oryx gives you the chance to join in the Mariachi party atmosphere and bring the traditional Mexican celebrations into your own home! This video slot offers beautiful graphics, giving a real sense of occasion and gravitas while still making the game fun to play.
