Given WMS’s recent penchant for over the top cabinets, with the grandiose theme, you might expect more of the same here, but no, they have gone with a very clean and simple design of one screen over another, perhaps not to detract from the epic on screen visuals with too much going on externally. The built in sound system however follows on from other high end titles and represents the fantastic soundtrack and massive sound effects very well indeed.
Not everything on the game is on fire, the low pay symbols are of the typical A-10 playing card variety. Though they have been colour coded to match the dragons and adorned with heraldic symbols, a little more effort could have been made here. Each of the five coloured dragons has a single icon symbol and a stacked symbol which fills an individual reel, these can combine further over subsequent reels to build full screen pictures of the dragons and their mistresses.
The base game is player friendly enough but not a lot to write home about, whilst there is a wild symbol in the form of a glowing crystal orb held by dragon’s fingers, for once the wild is largely irrelevant to big wins. This game is all about the pictorial dragon scenes which can be built up using the stacked symbols. The large wins are to be found by combining those with the free spins round.
There are a total of five full screen pictures which can be assembled, three of more in a row on the reels will grant a win but you need all 5 filling the screen to possibly trigger a scatter win bonus, this occurs only if the dragon from the top screen breathes fire after the whole picture is put together. If he does, 5 random credit values appear, then vanish one by one in a burst of flame till only one remains, this is then added to the original reel win.
Initiating the free spins round requires that you line up 3 or more of the fantastically rendered dragon eggs in sequence across the reels, this will grant an ever increasing amount of free spins. The pictorial stacked symbols can appear more frequently in the spins round, but what makes them truly lucrative is that when you assemble a full picture in the free spins bonus, the overlord dragon will always breathe fire into the screen for a scatter win, rather than randomly as in the base game.
This 3D slot has it all, animations of the portraits, reel icons and wins are phenomenal, as is the overall visual and audio experience of the game. The base game lacks punch, but this is almost inevitable given the high wins of the bonus rounds, which seem far from infrequent. The initial take up on the game seems good and after playing it, it’s easy to see why, this is fire breathing monster of a slot game. I’m not even going to bemoan the lack of a multiple or single progressive jackpot.
