Famed for its pizza and well known for a musical named after it, the city of Chicago is as iconic as New York or Vegas, granted for very different reasons. The rich blend of cultures and the heritage that has been found, and has yet been discovered, come together and create a heady atmosphere.

Much like downtown New York, Chicago has a lot of imaged links to the mobster scene of the 1920s and early 30s; although it existed, it probably didn’t look like what we’ve been conditioned into believing through the medium of film. Tom Horn aren’t one to shatter personas though, oh no, they build them up, mould them and create them into something more… into Chicago, the 5-reels slot machine.

    Got a Light?

The sultry woman of black and white, a smoking cigarette in her gloved hands is arguably the most intoxicating symbol of the game; she captures the raw power of the smoking gun, adopting the femme fatale that we’ve seen end the life of many a mobster.

All of the grid is a wash with similar tones, with splashes of colour utilised to emphasise the strength of the image; this is how we expected Gangland to be when we played that, another fine slot machine from the Tom Horn brand.

Sirens are waiting to erupt when you win, and a lowly silence is always on hand for when a loss rolls on by like a tumbleweed in the desert. This is an atmospheric and engrossing online casino game.

    Down on the Streets

Pounding the pavement is the only way to get out in front of the other gangs, showing them who’s the boss of these streets - the police may try to stop you, but they can’t deal with a force like you guys. Just look at you when you drop five wilds, you get €5,000, not forgetting that you move pawns and drop new ones to create more chances of a win.

The scatter is even more rewarding than that though, though the barrel of the gun isn’t something we wanted to be staring down. By getting between three and five of these symbols, you stand to gain up to 10 free spins, with all your prizes multiplied by x2 whenever you make them. Money can also find you when playing with the scatters, but not nearly as much as the wild, the wild is the top dog around here.

    Grunt Work

As a grunt you have to pay in place of the boss, with your limit being 18 credits in total – that’s only 2 coins on every single one of the 9 lines, not bad for a maximum bet. You can be a cheapskate and reduce your wager down to 0.05, but the boss won’t forget that behaviour in a hurry. Call us suck ups, but we like to get praise and not scorn.

There’s an Autoplay to select during the game, but we find that’s been explained so much that you’re probably sick of even reading the work ‘autoplay’, and so we’ll move onto the Gamble Feature. We’ve not encountered a Tom Horn title yet that doesn’t have one, and they all stay about the same, with the pattern on the back of the cards the only notable difference. You’ll see it here, with the card having the Chicago logo embossed on it.

What you have to do is ever so simple: decide what colour the card will be when revealed. Some games include an option to guess the suit as well, but here Tom Horn have kept it simple.

    Moving Out

After playing this we’re off to Chicago, via the handy time machine we keep in the garage; we just loved what the game had to offer that we never wanted it to end. If only we had an unlimited supply of money, then our dreams could be realised.

Jesting aside, Chicago is an addictive and fun slot machine from the brand, and one that is sure to win over a lot of hearts and leave minimal disappointment in its wake. A bonus level or two could have been included, but the action doesn’t suffer too much because of it lacking one.
