Horror, Fantasy, and Religion Combined

The design seems to be neither fish nor fowl, as it features horror movie staples such as demons and religious icons. From there it veers into the realm of fantasy with fairies and sorcerers. Taken as a whole it seems to be a ‘mashup’ of a multitude of different inspirations. The theme utilised here was a gamble for Top Game and, in general, it works.

As part of its overall supernatural theme, it has 13 paylines instead of the usual 15 for a game of this type. It does still have the standard five reels. The prizes are mixture of progressive jackpots and regular payouts, which go up to a maximum of $39,000. The main attractions of this game are the wild symbols, bonus games, scatters, and free spins.

Wild ’n Out

The wild in Diablo 13 is a haunted house, the likes of which would make any monster proud. A castle with towering stonewalls, a blood moon in the background, and bats in flight complete the scene. This wild will substitute for any other symbol, so most often you will use it in building combinations of other symbols. However, getting five of them on a single payline with a maximum bet triggers the Monster Madness prize that leads to the progressive jackpot feature. This is truly the main attraction and the key reason as to why you should give Diablo 13 a whirl. The only symbols it won't substitute for is the scatter and bonus, the other two feature symbols. A fairy that can appear on the first, third, and fifth reels represents the scatter symbol. If you get it on all three simultaneously on the same active payline you trigger a healthy free spins bonus that can work to extend your game time.

Wizardry and Wonder

The bonus game symbol in Diablo 13 is a wizard. Your bonus play is determined by how many you get on any active payline, with three being the minimum needed to trigger the extra round. With three you end up playing for prizes in the 30 to 150 bonus points range, with four you end up playing for bonus points between 150 and 750, and finally with all five falling on an active line you play for prizes that fall between 450 and 2,250 bonus points. When all these elements combine, you can see that there is real power located within the wizard bonus symbol.

Dancing with the Devil

Diablo 13 features a strange number of paylines, but that can lead to some unique betting combinations. It uses a total of 13 coins, one per line. The amount you can wager on each coin varies from $0.01 to $3; so your top bet is $39 should you activate all available payline options. The game offers a standard prize of 13,000 coins, which equals $39,000, but it also has the progressive jackpot that is growing and changing on a near daily basis.

The Devil is in the Details

Diablo 13 is an unusual game to say the very least. It has to be applauded for its effort to try something different, but in the final analysis we feel that it's missed its mark. The design feels forced and a ‘mashup’ of every fantasy element, without thought to the source material. It almost feels as if they had direction at the start and either ran out of ideas or else the game started getting too dark and they ended up adding some less offensive characters. This will go down as one of those ‘love or hate’ concept releases for a number of different reasons, but that isn’t to say that Diablo 13 should be overlooked out of hand.
