Treasures of Tombs is yet another of those pesky Egypt-themed slot games. The five-reel video slot, which is powered by the renowned software developer Playson, is all about an intrepid explorer searching a treasure-filled tomb.
If you’ve had your fill of slot games centred on Ancient Egypt – and we wouldn’t blame you – you might want to look elsewhere. But if you’re interested in playing another, you could do worse than Treasures of Tombs. The slot, which includes nine pay-lines, is not a million miles away from Novomatic’s Book of Ra, featuring many of the same symbols. The theme, of course, is a well-worn one, but the gameplay itself is, on the whole, pretty good. Let’s take a closer look…

The action in Treasures of Tombs takes place on a 5x3 grid against the backdrop of… well, a tomb presumably. The brickwork is etched with hieroglyphics, in any case, so it’s a pretty safe guess. The reels are transparent, bordered by a colourful frame, and symbols include the usual playing card icons, stylised to resemble bits of treasure. The usual artefacts from Ancient Egypt crop up, such as gold statues and a portrait of the Eye of Horus.
What’s an expedition into the tombs without a guide, though? Naturally, the game includes an icon which represents the explorer himself – or herself, in this case. Our beautiful female explorer is blonde and wears an over-sized hat on her head.
You’ve packed your pickaxe, said farewell to your family and are about to descend into the tomb. When you reappear, you’ll be rich beyond your wildest dreams. That’s the plan, anyway. Before you take the plunge, though, you better determine your betting range. When you click on Bet One, along the bottom of the screen, you’ll be able to set the coin size, which ranges from one to 500. Then you can set the number of pay-lines; players can choose to play on one or all nine. When you click on Max Bet, you’ll determine the maximum bet allowed and turn the reels automatically at that bet. Auto, meanwhile, is the button used to set the autoplay function in play.
..is, naturally, to find treasure. Well, why else are you invading the tomb of a bygone pharaoh?
There are some very fine-paying symbols in Treasures of Tombs. Forgive us for not knowing what they all are – we guess we missed the Egyptology class at school! The golden statuette which resembles half man, half lion – a sphinx, right? – pays 30 for three-in-a-line. Snag four and you’re looking at a pay-out of 100, hit five and you’ll claim 750. This is the second highest-paying symbol in the game, second only to the female explorer. Land five of her and you’ll win the 5,000 credit jackpot. Four pays 1,000, three pays 100 and you’ll win 10 for two. The image of Horus, represented by an eagle, pays 2,000 for five and 400 for four.
The lowest-paying symbols are, of course, the playing card icons. The best you can hope to win is 150, for five Aces or Kings; you’ll win 100 for five Queens, Jacks or tens.
The wild in the game is the golden Eye of Ra symbol. As wild, it substitutes for all other symbols in the game to help you form matching combinations. The wild serves two functions, though: it’s also the game’s scatter. Land three or more to win ten free spins. What’s more, free spins can be re-triggered. The Eye of Ra additionally pays out 20 for four or 200 for five. Yep, this icon can pretty much do it all.
A supplementary bonus symbol is randomly and automatically generated prior to a round of free spins. The bonus symbol can be any icon in the game except for the wild Eye of Ra. If the bonus symbol appears during the ten free spins, it will expand vertically to cover the entire reel and furnish the player with rewards.
In truth, there’s not a whole lot to distinguish Treasures of Tombs from its contemporaries. The best you can say is that this is another so-so slot game centred on Ancient Egypt. If you like the theme, you’ll probably enjoy it; it really depends on your tolerance level. Spin away and see if you can hit that 5,000 jackpot.
