Surf’s Up’s symbols kick off with the card deck J, Q, K and A, all of which appear as carved stone artifacts set amongst various island flowers and greenery. Two pretty island maidens—one brunette, one blonde—appear on the game’s Free Spin symbols and trigger a very fast free games feature when they appear on the reels simultaneously. The dark-haired girl only appears on reel 1 and the blonde, on reel 5. But when they show up together, a burst of happy island music rings out, the background changes from white to ocean blue and 3 free spins roll out in quick succession. The Surf’s Up Bonus game is triggered when the Bonus symbol appears on any payline’s first, 2nd and 3rd reels. A wave splashes down the screen and a mini-game board pops up depicting 3 surfers sitting on boards in the ocean. As you listen to the catchy beach music, you click on one of the surfers. He or she will then surf a huge wave, after which judges hold up scorecards letting you know how you did.

If they hold up two scores, you collect the total of their sums and go back to the main game. If they show one score and one trophy, then you get to advance to the next level and surf again.
