📜 Baccarat History - Learn About One of The Oldest Card Games
While the early origins of Baccarat are shrouded in mystery, many historians believe it evolved from a game that was popular in Asia, known as Macao. That same game became popular in Europe in the 1700s, after it was brought back by sailors.
By the 1800s, the more modern version of Baccarat had become popular among French nobility, while commoners also played a three-player version of the game in gaming rooms. In 1900, Chemin de fer had taken over as the most popular form of the game, and this version in which the Player and Banker can make some decisions during play, remains the most popular version in France.
However, in most parts of the world, Punto Banco is now the game we know as Baccarat. This modern casino version takes away all the player’s control on the Player hand, and it has worked as a house-banked game since around the 1940s.
