Ok, the new game doesn’t deliver the photo realistic symbols you get on some of Microgaming’s biggest titles like the official Battlestar Galactica slot, it’s much more similar to the cartoon style visuals we got recently on the Bikini Party slot game, though without the risqué theme or high variance gameplay of that release.
The reels are solid rather than transparent, which on one hand is a bit of a shame given the lovely ocean and cloud backdrop, on the other, the plain reel background showcases the bright vibrant colours used for the win symbols. Not a playing card in sight amongst them and that’s a big plus point straight out of the harbour, instead you get Barracuda, Flying Fish, Compass’s and other nautical themed images to go fishing for.
Unusually for a simpler slot title, the audio is pretty decent too, with a liberal sprinkling of sound effects for the animation sequences and bonus rounds, overall, it’s a solid, tight production effort, no Titanic, but not a wooden lifeboat either.
Personally I do think the game could warrant a little more flexibility in the setup, the 5x3 layout is pretty standard and the 15 game pay-lines are fixed. The only thing you can then adjust is the bet range, which ranges from a tiny 0.15 credits at a penny a line to a max of 11.25, not one for the high rollers that is for sure, though it is charmingly simple to play in this structure.
Although the basic fishing trip in the base game is pretty rewarding in its own right, the game really comes to life in the free spins round. To begin the round collect three or more scattered free spin icons on the reels, you then get to select one of five different boats from a dinghy to a luminous green motor yacht which will determine your number of spins, with a max of 20 available.
Although the spins aren’t re-triggerable they are far from miserly in pay-outs as, after selecting a boat, you get to spin a fishing reel to determine a multiplier which will apply for the duration of the free games bonus round, with a top pick of x5 being available.
Reel Spinner may not have the most exciting theme we’ve ever seen, but it is a far more exciting slot than the theme might actually suggest. Marry that up with good gameplay, visuals and decent audio production and this could be an under the radar release that becomes very popular over time.
What it lacks in appeal for the high rollers it does make up for in simplicity of play and enjoyment, there’s also a 112,000 cash jackpot in the game which is very generous compared to the max bet and may tempt more of the high pay-out slots players into the mix.
