Going for Golden

For most SimplePlay titles, things just don’t come together as expected when it comes to theme. They get the production values right, but the graphics tend to be somewhat off kilter. Golden Chicken fixes this problem, as the theme really is a lot of fun, as the inspiration from Asia is obvious. Gold reels, gold text, and gold jackpot totals compliment the deep red velvet background. In fact, this game is simply gold galore for the most part. Warming and lavish, we really like the overall theme of Golden Chicken.

If the design of Golden Chicken is generally pretty good, the symbols thrown in tend to actually weigh the game down, as they simply aren’t up to much. Yet again a SimplePlay title has fallen victim to the mishmash approach, as you have oversized symbols, undersized symbols, ill fitting symbols, and more all thrown together. Honestly, it is a bit of a shame that the symbols used in the game aren’t more consistent.

The Chicken or the Egg

Gameplay within Golden Chicken really is basic, to the point that it actually left us longing for something more fun. Built around 30 paylines, Golden Chicken is all a bit samey, as we have literally seen it all before, with it arguably being done better elsewhere too. Payscale wise it is once again just more of the same, with wagers starting at 6.00 before rising all the way up to 60.00. Thinking outside of the box simply isn’t the forte of SimplePlay, with that really showing in Golden Chicken.

What saves Golden Chicken is the fact that it features the usual triple-header of progressive jackpots. The standard jackpots in this low to medium variance game can largely be ignored, but the cumulative offerings serve up some big-time prizes. Labelled Major, Minor, and Mini, the figures for such are positioned to the right side of the screen, with the Major jackpot reaching near life-changing sums of money at times.

Crowing for Nothing

Sadly, Golden Chicken hits a low when it comes bonus features, as there is simply nothing here to keep you coming back for more. You have the wilds and scatters, which means easy combinations and free spins can be grabbed, but that is pretty much all there is to know. No mini-games and no bonus rounds, SimplePlay could have certainly done a little better here.

Running Through the Coop

If you’ve managed to get some degree of enjoyment out of Golden Chicken, we have great news, as there is other games out there just like it. Other developers seem to have tried their hand at creating games that run in a similar fashion, with two in particular certainly jumping out to us. Merkur have stepped up to create 221B Baker Street, which is inspired by the tales of Sherlock Holmes. On top of that, Gamesys have released Dragons Wild, a game that is filled to the brim with mythical beasts.

Golden Chicken Is Simply More Middle of the Road Fare!

Golden Chicken is certainly not going to be the crowning achievement of SimplePlay, as the game is hardly a headline making. Taking its misgivings on board, this game is still a fair amount of fun to play, even if it’s just for a quick spin or two. Not amazing, but certainly not bad, Golden Chicken is just another middle of the road SimplePlay release at heart.
