As you can guess, gold is the main colour theme, including the game’s title at the top of the screen. Hinting at the high-end rewards on offer, some of the spaces between the individual letters are filled with jewels. While most games focused on Egypt decide to show from the floor up, this game’s background layout is different as it isn’t dominated by tombs, but is actually a view from above.

This means that the 5x5 reels stand out. While plenty of games use 3 reels, King of Pharaohs has made full use of the increased amount by having them dominate the screen. Instead of being distracted by the background, what you focus on are the images, especially as they all relate to Ancient Egypt. No fruit or Aces and Kings here.

The 25 paylines are shown either side of the reels, with the numbers lighting up when you get to the appropriate number. The music is nothing too distinctive. There’s no initial sound, and the spinning noises are exotically solemn.

If you don’t already know much about the ancient Egyptian symbols, you’ll be tempted to find out more. The 9 regular symbols include the Sphinx, Ankh, Scarab and the Eye of Ra, and all have been designed with intricate details.  Not only will you be curious to know what the names are, but what they represent. Unsurprisingly, the Tutankhamun head is the most valuable, though it is nice to see that 2 of a kind is worth something for most symbols.

The five green buttons do look good visually. When deciding how much to bet you can choose between the Bet One, which goes from number 1-8, or with the 25 Lines box, you can go up in sets of 25 until 125.

It is a way of avoiding the plus/minus buttons, but the purists will probably prefer the traditional system. But even they will be wowed by the symbols being revealed horizontally rather than vertically. There’s no fast setting or any need for one. It already goes at a super quick pace.

You do have to pay more attention with Bet Max.  While pressing that button means you are at the limit for the lines you are betting for, you can increase the bet when using the coin worth.  These values cover 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50 and 1.

All are in euros, as with the rest of the game. There is less flexibility with the Auto Play. It tells you that it will only stop when you run out of funds. It could do with more options.

It’s always nice to see a Wildcard and Scatter. These keep to the symbolism of the game, with the Wildcard being a Tutankhamun image. As well as replacing all the other 8 main symbols, it is also worth 2,000 credits for 5.

In addition, if you are playing on Max Bet and get 5 of them you can get the Bonus Jackpot. As that is a five-figure amount that’s quite the incentive to play for higher stakes.

The Scatter is a very important-looking scroll. Getting 2 or above receives a credit reward, with the x500 the initial bet for 5 being the most striking. But the pyramid reward will also grab your attention. If you receive the pyramid icon on columns 2, 3 or 4 in one of 3 patterns you’ll get up to x100 your bet. Now that’s a pyramid scheme we can be a fan of!

The music may not be that inspiring and some more Auto Play options would be helpful. But those are minor points when giving an overall view.  It’s always nice to see all the symbols keep to the game’s theme, the playing pace is really quick and there are enough variances to keep the game interesting.

Not to mention the great prizes for the more adventurous player. The chance to win like a king is most definitely here.
