Totem Treasure is not an ultra-modern game; quite the contrary, in fact. Which is not to say that the illustrations are in any way poor, merely that the title cherishes gameplay more than design. The symbols are well sketched, and the designers have utilised a broad colour palette to get the job done. The reels appear on a simple blue backdrop, with the name of the game appearing below reels two, three and four.

The control panel appears in its usual place, with buttons for Bet Max, Coins, Lines, Win and Spin. You can also toggle between Expert/Regular modes, the advantage of the former being that you can set AutoPlay in effect. You can play up to 500 automatic spins and decide whether the AutoPlay stops when all spins are complete, or if a win exceeds a figure determined by you.

In terms of stakes, players can only play one coin per payline, with 5 being the maximum per line and 0.25 being the minimum. As such, the bet max is 25 per spin. Play with whatever stakes you feel comfortable with and get started!

Although there are no bonus multipliers or free spins on offer in Totem Treasure, your chances of hitting a win are greatly enhanced by the presence of a wild symbol. Other icons include the aforementioned dreamcatcher, peace pipe, teepee and campfire. There are also playing card icons: 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. Lastly, there is a headshot of a steely-eyed golden eagle. This is the highest paying symbol in the table, able to award 40 for three, 1,000 for four and a whopping 12,000 for five at maximum bet. Of course, the wild can help you achieve any of these sums if you’re just one short.

Among the other symbols, the teepee pays 15 for three, 500 for four and 5,000 for five. The campfire pays eight for three, 200 for four and 2,000 for five. The dreamcatcher will furnish your pockets to the tune of seven for three, 80 for four and 1,000 for five. Last among the character symbols, the peace pipe pays six for three matching, 60 for four in a row and 600 for all five in a line.

As is typical in slots, the playing cards are at the lower end of the spectrum, although to be fair, the top playing cards pay rather well. The Ace, for instance, pays a 500-credit top prize, which is not inconsiderable. It also pays 50 for four.

Unfortunately, there is no bonus round in Totem Treasure: the treasure will come your way one way and one way only: by finding matching combinations of symbols.

Totem Treasure is a nice offering from the reputable Microgaming suite, a throwback to the days when video slots meant hitting matching symbols and winning cash, rather than gazing at delightful three-dimensional graphics and staring agog at outlandish, Xbox-worthy animations.
