The History of Roulette

Roulette is a popular game in modern-day casinos, but has a long history that dates back to the late 18th century when a primitive version of this game was first invented by Blaise Pascal. While the game as we know it today has since been modified significantly, it is still based on the same “little wheel” (French for Roulette). The version of the game that is played today was first introduced in Paris, France in the 18th century and was then only played by French royalty.

There are some urban legends that surround this game, one of which even suggests that the game is owned by the devil himself. The story goes that a man by the name of Francois Blanc made a deal with the devil in order to obtain the secrets of this game, thus, providing him with the ability to win consistently. The casino myths & legends that surround this casino table game have only contributed to its mystique and popularity.

American Roulette vs. European Roulette

The wheel has different variations according to the location in which it is being played. For example, in the United States, the standard wheel features an extra space on the wheel, referred to as the double zero wheel because the extra slot is deemed “00.” This 38-pocket wheel is used in the American version. Alternatively, the 37-pocket European version is played with only the single zero pocket. There are other wheel layouts as well such as French, California, and Vegas, but European and American are the most popular and widely recognized. Perhaps the most significant difference between the American and European variations is the house edge percentage attached to each variant (The American variation yields a 5.26% house edge, whereas the European version has a 2.7% house edge, making it easier to win).

Players are now able to play and master a variety of games thanks to the Internet and the multitude of formats available at online gambling sites and even iPad casinos. And while in a land-based establishment, the outcome of a spin relies on gravity and centripetal force, online sites merely enlist the help of the random number generator (RNG) system to determine spin outcomes.

Table Layout

All gaming tables contain both an inside and an outside betting area, though the exact format varies across locations. The outside betting area consists of bet boxes for various bets including column bets, even money bets red/black, odd/even bets, and dozen bets. The inside betting area, on the other hand, is for individual number bets. The inside area numbers are organized in three vertical columns and 12 rows.

Buying In

Because there can be a large number of bettors surrounding a table in a brick-and-mortar casino, special chips are required to play to help differentiate between the various players’ bets and avoid arguments between players. Each player receives his or her own colored chip (bought from the cashier). Different colored chips allow players to stack chips on top of each other’s bets. Online betting is also indicated by colored chips. Roulette tables feature various minimum and maximum bet requirements for both outside and inside bets in order to accommodate a wide range of bet limits and player bankrolls.

Placing Bets

At a full table in the middle of a busy casino floor, players will get in around 30 spins per hour however, more spins per hour are likely possible online, so watch your bankroll. Bets are allowed to be placed and changed after the dealer spins the wheel up until the dealer announces, “No more bets, please.” The dealer clears out all the losing bets and pays any winning bets, and the game starts over again.

Generally speaking, this is a game that can be played by any level player because it encompasses both simple and complex betting options within the various outside and inside bet boxes. The different inside and outside bets, as well as the number bets and other choices, allow a beginner to learn to place wagers on the easiest bets, while the experienced player can learn to bet at a more complicated level. A smart bettor will study up and review the different bets before approaching the table with his chips.

The Rundown

This is a very fast-paced table game and should be observed a few times before played, due mainly in part to the various bets that are offered at the table. If you don’t know what you’re betting on, you could lose all your money fast. Players who understand the bet boxes and the table layout will experience an enjoyable and satisfying time at the table and will likely return to the wheel sooner than later.
