First released in 1984, Tetris became one of the worlds most popular and quintessential computer games. Simple to play, endlessly enjoyable and mercilessly addictive, those little coloured blocks gave us hours upon hours of gameplay entertainment. In order to pay homage to the retro arcade game of Tetris, this slot machine by Wazdan software has been designed in a very simple fashion, showing various various symbols made up out of tessellated blocks. Admittedly, however, those icons are fairly uninspired, opting to use the customary playing card values such as 9, 10, J, Q, K and A when there was potential for the reels to be filled with retro style fruit symbols in pixilated block form. Nevertheless, this game is bright and bold, just like the original arcade game.

One thing that you couldn't do with Tetris all those years ago was play it on your phone. Nowadays, however, the mobile gaming sphere is becoming more and more the norm, so it is no surprise that Cube Mania has been optimised for smartphone and tablet devices. This doesn't hinder the gameplay, nor does it detract from the quality of the graphics (which are understandably basic to begin with). What players will notice about the game is the fact that is can be controlled with finger taps and swipe motions. In fact, players just need to to swipe up to see the game's paytable.

That paytable consists of prize values which relate to the chosen bet, showing just how much will be returned whenever a sequence of three of four identical icons appear on one of the 9 paylines. Those paylines are fixed, meaning that players won't be able to toggle the amount of winning chances on the reels. They can choose to alter the value of the bet that is placed on the reels, however, with total bets that range from 0.10 to 100.00 credits. As you can see, there are a few symbols that do more than just pay out their wins on the paylines. There is the wild joker symbol, for example, which will appear all over the reels to fill in winning combinations for all ordinary icons. And when it does that, the value of the normal win will be doubled, making for some nice boosts to your betting balance.

There are a couple of special scatter symbols, both of which will pay their prizes regardless of whether they appear on a payline. The first of those scatters is depicted by a “?” icon and it will award a mystery prize that could rise up to 200x the total bet value. The wins available for the ordinary “S” scatter aren't quite as big, but this special symbol will trigger a round of 15 or 30 free games whenever three or four show up respectively.

Wazdan software has tapped into one of the most universally loved video games with this 4-reel slot machine. That said, it does feel like the game could have done more to give players that retro arcade feeling, apart from simply showing some simple blocks arranged into generic playing card symbols. Perhaps there could have been a bonus side game which featured some gameplay based on the classic arcade game, or even some more obvious visual references to Tetris.
