Grab Those Gems

Collecting gems is the aim of the game and to find them you need to successfully make your way through a network of industrial pipes, avoiding dead ends, to find the treasure. There’s a key to the map in the top right of the screen, one which eventually swells to fill the screen and reveals itself to be a safe, like the sort you might find in a cash office. Okay then, so it transpires that you’re actually exploring a network of passageways inside a safe. How strange. In an era where many developers are tripping over themselves to churn out casino games rapid-style with little thought for quality or creativity, it’s refreshing to encounter a game that’s clearly had a lot of thought put into it.

A Cash Dash

Cash Cube is designed to be a mobile-compatible game, so it should work fine on iPhone or Android, tablet included, making it suitable for gaming on the go. There’s some interface issues that beset this game however which may cause it to load on your device of choice but for some of the buttons not to work correctly when clicked or to fail to respond altogether. This issue isn’t just limited to mobile either; you may encounter the same issue on desktop. When you do play, you’ll find that on desktop Cash Cube literally does form a cube in your browser instead of taking up the full width of the screen. This isn’t a problem per se, but is indicative of the fact that this game is best enjoyed on mobile, when the graphics and animations look at their best.

Playing Cash Cube feels more like playing a videogame, perhaps something that would have been released on the N64 around the era that games like Goldeneye were proving immensely popular with a generation of students. After a while, the constant motion of this game can be a little unsettling, almost as enough to induce motion sickness, but once you start playing, you’ll rapidly find that you’re immersed in the game and have developed tunnel vision as you make your way deeper inside the safe that conceals gems and other treasures. Cash Cube basically combines Tetris with some sort of first person shooter in terms of the way you actually navigate your way through the safe.

Blueprint for Victory

Below the main game screen, you’ll see a number of rolled up blueprints. These are the plans to inside the safe and your guide to where the treasure lies. Do architects still use actual blueprints or do they only appear as a throwback nowadays in gangster movies when the crew are plotting a bank job? It seems likely that physical blueprints have been replaced by their digital equivalent, except for here, where it’s business as usual.

You’re technically looking at analogue blueprints which have been represented in digital form, which is pretty meta. Anyway, one of the prints which has been rolled open shows various block shapes. Select a side of the safe and a block shape and then enter the safe and work your way through it. It’s at this stage you’ll find out whether the path you’ve chosen is the correct one or another false turn.

Cash Cube Conclusion

Cash Cube is a game that scores highly for originality. There aren’t a lot of instant win games, if indeed any, which look like this, and for that reason alone you might decide that this game warrants a look. If you’re unsure of what you’re expected to do, which is understandable given that the format will be new to you, play for fun at first. Then, once you’ve grasped the format at stake here, you can play for real money and start to experience Cash Cube the way it was meant to be played.
