When you strip away the sci-fi mysticism, you will find a 5 reel video slot with 3 rows of symbols and up to 20 win lines. You can select from a wide range of stakes, from just 1p per line if you wish and up to £25 per line (£500 per spin) at the other extreme. Auto-spin is included, however this only allows up to 10 spins each time.
This is a lower variance slot, with many smaller wins in play, rather than a couple of big ones. The wilds do mean you will often hit multiple wins at the same time too. The best symbol is the pyramid, which will bring you 750 coins for 5, 250 for 4 and 100 for just 3. The eye is worth 300 coins for the full set, and the eagle 200. Next the robotic looking snake head, guy with a gun and wider view of the snake / robot pay 150, 100 or 75 coins for 5 of a kind respectively. The sci-fi playing card symbols make up the rest of the wins.
There are 4 special symbols it is good to know about. The Stargate symbol with ‘Bonus’ written on it triggers the free spins. You’ll get 20 spins for 5, 15 for 4 and 10 for just 3 of these anywhere on the reels. There are also 3 s. Regular ones simply substitute for the regular symbols – this is the SGC logo. Mother Ship wilds add multipliers of between 2x and 5x to any wins they become a part of, and appear on reels 2 and 3 only. The transporter rings wilds are on reels 2 and 4 only. When this symbol forms part of a win, it expands to cover the entire reel – often creating several more wins as it does so.
I was very impressed with the visuals the first time I triggered the bonus round. The view zooms back to reveal the whole Stargate, and then you zoom through space / time to a new setting (like an alien Grand Canyon). The reels remain smaller in the middle of the gate, and you will quickly run through however many free spins you won. There are multipliers for the wins of between 2x and 5x. After you finish you see a screen showing your total wins -then go back through the Stargate (cue the animation again) and back to the main game. While this was visually very impressive, I found the wins from regular play were bigger – especially when this involved the different types of wild.
This is one TV tie-in that manages to capture the essence of the original show – and still create a very playable slot game. The animation when you trigger the free spins bonus round is almost worth playing the game for on its own. Having 3 sets of wild symbols also adds some interest to the game. Any one spin can get stacked wilds or multipliers, triggering a big win. If you enjoy sci-fi slots in general, this is worth a spin even if you did not catch the original TV series. Who knows, the slot could have you searching for those back episodes.
