Thai Temple is a 5 reel, 15 payline slot game from Playtech, boasting a top jackpot of 10,000 coins and the chance of winning four different progressive jackpots which are linked to the game. It features a number of typically Thai symbols, including a monk, buddha, dragons and a tiger.
While the theme might not be traditional, the format of this game is pared back and simple, with no bonus games and only free spins rounds or a Wild or Scatter symbol to add interest. At least the theme is quite original, the only other Thai themed games we can think of are Thai Flowers by Barcrest and Thai Paradise from Playtech.
Chinese and Japanese themes are more common among the Asian cultures but with the increasing popularity of Thailand as a package holiday destination, we imagine players are also becoming more familiar with its culture and associated symbolism.

With no real animation on offer here, the Thai theme is entirely dependent on the artwork of the intro, background and symbols. Their style is 2D and brightly coloured, emphasised by the black background. The symbols are all typically Thai although we spotted an error with the Monk symbol as Thai monks don’t wear beards, which makes him look more Japanese than Thai. Apart from the Monk we have a gold dragon, a dog, a beautiful Thai lady, a tiger, a golden Buddha and a temple.
The Temple is the Wild in the game, while the Golden Buddha is the Scatter symbol which triggers the Free Games feature (i.e free spins). We do feel that there’s much more the developers could have done with Thai theme, from flowers to traditional dancers, Muay Thai boxing and many other Thai traditions and symbolism. They could even have incorporated a white sandy beach somewhere in the background, which is what many players will associate with Thailand, it being a popular beach holiday destination.
The main features on offer here come from the Golden Temple Wild and the Golden Buddha scatter symbol. The Golden Temple can appear on any reel, substituting for all symbols apart from the scatter and when part of a winning combination, will double the winnings. If you get really lucky and land 5 of these wilds all on the same payline, then you trigger the progressive jackpot for untold winnings.
The Free Games (or free spins) feature is triggered when you land 3 or more Golden Buddha scatter symbols anywhere on the reels, which will award you 15 free spins with a 3x multiplier. This can be retriggered if you land a further 3 golden buddhas during the spins, giving you up to 165 free spins if you repeatedly retrigger the round. If you did get this lucky then there’s also a cash prize of 500x your stake up for grabs. Symbol prizes range from 2 to 10,000 coins, the full details are in the pay table below.
This is a simple game in terms of format, with only two symbols to look out for and no bonus games, only a free spin round to break up the regular spinning of the reels. While the theme is a nice choice, it’s limited to static artwork rather than being taken full advantage of for any impressive video features. We liked the original choice of theme and it had great potential, being an Asian culture which in the last decade or two has become increasingly familiar to European travellers thanks to lower airfares, leading to more package holidays to this Southeast Asian country.
If you like your slots simple or you’re particularly into Thai culture then you may well enjoy this game but with its lack of features it’s unlikely to keep any new players hooked for long. It’s an original theme which had plenty of potential but the developers haven’t quite pulled it off.
