Roman Around

The way this game has been designed, you’re playing in the first person perspective. This means that you can actually see your arm extended in front of you when you go to shake and then throw the gold coins you’ll be gambling with. You can’t see your own face of course so it’s left to you to imagine just how handsome or beautiful you’d look dressed as a Roman centurion. While the playing screen looks beautiful, the only thing that detracts from the overwhelming Romanness of it all is the buttons positioned either side of the board. They need to be there so you can control the game, but do they need to be that big and obvious?

The icons sit to the far left and right and they’ve been neatly designed in fairness. It’s just unfortunate that they take up so much space and that there are so many of them. Couldn’t some of these options have been contained within a submenu? The reason why R Franco Games will have done this is so that they can make the game easier to play on mobile. Roman Double Up is a mobile-compatible game which plays smoothly on Android and iPhone. On desktop it still plays okay, but some of the buttons have been poorly positioned which is less than ideal.

Throw Down a Double

There’s some real history to Roman Double Up. R Franco Games haven’t just invented a game; rather they’ve taken a game which Roman soldiers actually played and recreated it for the benefit of online casino gamblers. As for who first invented this game, it’s anyone’s guess. This is heads and tails after all, and for long as there have been coins, there have been people gambling on which way up they will land. In terms of choosing which way you wanna bet, you can select either heads or tails. If it’s tails, two red X’s will be displayed on the coins in the bottom left of the screen.

In terms of adjusting your bet level, you need to click on the lion’s head shield. 0.1 is the default bet, but you can set a max bet of 100 coins if you like, or more likely settle on somewhere in between. When the game starts, an animated sequence will simulate you throwing your coins onto the floor and the movements of the other soldiers as you wait for them all to come to rest. If you win, a shower of gold coins will appear through the screen, toasting your success. The animations that kick in when the game commences aren’t the best in truth, and certainly aren’t as good as those that preface them. In terms of playing, if the coins land with one on heads and one on tails, you’ll throw again. Otherwise, if you called heads you win the bet and vice versa.

Final Verdict

Roman Double Up by R Franco Games is a super little instant win game. Even when you play for fun it’s entertaining, and the theme is strong enough to actually place you there, as if you were really standing in the courtyard of a Roman palace. Play for real money and you’ve got yourself a game that’s likely to keep you coming back repeatedly to savour more of these simple thrills. Although best enjoyed on mobile, even if you wind up only playing on desktop, the graphics and animations are still enough to make this game a real cracker.
