What is the IOMGSC License?
The Isle of Man Gambling Supervision Commission (IOMGSC) is an authority that provides licensing to gambling organizations. It is one of the longest-standing regulators, originally established in 1962 to supervise land-based gambling on the island. Its power expanded dramatically with the introduction of the Online Gambling Regulation Act 2001 (OGRA).
OGRA brought the Isle of Man into modern times as one of the first jurisdictions to formally regulate online gambling. Since then, the island has been able to attract major online gambling operators under the Isle of Man gaming license. The authority has also become a gold standard for global iGaming regulators in terms of fairness, transparency, and player protection.
The GSC oversees licensing but also monitors gambling activities and enforces laws for both B2C operators (those offering games directly to players) and B2B providers such as software developers and network service operators. An IOMGSC license gives players peace of mind that the gambling sites they visit are fair, secure, and transparent.
Importantly, the IOMGSC's jurisdiction extends beyond the Isle of Man to companies that operate on and through the island. It is worth noting that holding a GSC license does not mean a gambling site can operate globally because the laws of each country still apply.
The GSC has the power to issue, suspend, or revoke licenses, impose conditions, demand audits, and enforce anti-money-laundering and player protection measures. While the Isle of Man is a self-governing Crown dependency, the GSC works cooperatively with other global regulators through memoranda of understanding and shared testing standards.
