Lucky Letters is the product of Portomaso Gaming. The firm is best known for its lurid, left field and exotic themed slots, titles that are bold, bright and adventurous. In comparison, Lucky Letters seems somewhat underwhelming on first glance. It’s certainly not going to walk away with any awards for inventiveness.
In execution, however, the game plays every bit as well any of Portomaso Gaming’s other offerings, and should not be overlooked simply because the concept it operates on is an ultra-simplistic one.
The reels themselves, tinged a fetching shade of green, are graced by a selection of letters from the alphabet, each one rendered in a bright, patterned typeface that’s reminiscent of the playing board in a TV gameshow. It ain’t subtle, but it does make identifying winning combos a cinch.
No struggling to decipher ambiguous symbols here: Lucky Letters is so bold, you don’t need to put your glasses on to decipher its reels – you could make them out in a darkened room at 20 paces. While most letter-based slots adopt the playing card format (J, Q, K, A), Lucky Letters’ selections appear to be more random than that: winning letters include C, A, N, M and H. There’s also an exclamation mark symbol which you’ll be seeing a lot of.
The backdrop for the game features a plethora of symbols that can all be associated with luck in some way. There’s a quartet of playing cards, all aces, there’s a winged dice, a selection of four-leaf clovers, a horseshoe and a selection of stars and diamonds.
If good luck symbols alone could muster a jackpot, Lucky Letters represents your best shot of scooping a fortune. In practice, it doesn’t quite work that way. Spoiler alert: in life not everyone can be a winner. Still, if it makes you feel luckier, kiss those fortune charms on the screen before you press play. You never know.
The game’s 5 reels comprise a mere 9 lines, with a maximum coin wager of 5. There’s a bonus feature, autoplay option, scatter symbol and wild symbol: all the staples you’d expect in an online slot in other words. The game pays out from left to right on the reels, as is the norm, with only the highest win paid per line.
While you can notch up smaller wins with the lower value lettered symbols, the bonus represents your best bet for scooping a tidy sum. The, 4 or 5 symbols in line will activate the bonus feature, which appears as a yellow S.
If you’ve entered the bonus game via 3 matching symbols, the maximum amount to be won is 840. For 4 symbols that rises to 1,280, increasing to a not too shabby 1,680 for 5 symbols.
Lucky Letters might not be the fanciest video slot, but it pays a packet when it’s in a good mood, and that’s worth more than any amount of pretty graphics and awe-inducing sound effects.
The game’s scatter symbol will grant free spins ; 3, 4 or 5 of these symbols anywhere in view will activate this feature with a multiplier thrown in for good measure. Finally, the wild symbol which is a yellow O will serve as a substitute for any of the other symbols except for bonus, scatter and jackpot.
Will the letters be lucky for you? There’s only one way to find out. Spin the reels and pray that fortune’s on your side.
