To say Old Timer is a simple game would be to tell the truth, but it would also be to overlook some of the nifty aspects involved, such as the nudge option and the super-meter mini mode. As far as layout is concerned, you’ll find all the usual control buttons along the bottom of the screen, designed to resemble buttons on an actual machine in a real-life casino. The buttons include those for Max Bet, Bet, Spin and Collect. There’s also a panel where you can choose your coin size, and tabs recording amounts related to credits, bet and win.
In terms of stakes, the gamer can play with coins valued at just 0.2, up to a maximum value of 1. A maximum of 2 coins can be staked per line, meaning a maximum bet-per-line of 10 credits.
The traditional fruit theme, of course, means the reels are flooded with lemons, bells, grapes, oranges, cherries and watermelons. There is also a golden dollar sign and, in the mini-game, crowns, pears and triple 7s. The symbols are two-dimensional but colourful, and the entire reel grid will be an iridescence of lights when you hit a win, as in the casino slots of old. In fact, when you hit a win you will quite literally ascend to the upper levels, to take part in another set of reels. This second-stage reel grid features bigger payouts and higher prizes. Indeed, the top jackpot on the super-meter mini slot is a whopping 6,000x.
In the regular 3x3 grid, which is located in the lower half of the screen, three reels are separated from each other by golden frames. It is here where you can win 20 credits for three oranges or lemons, 60 credits for three grape bunches, 80 credits for a trio of watermelons of 100 credits for three bells. Note, these amounts are true if you are betting at max bet, i.e. 10 credits per spin. The win values associated with the symbols are halved if you are playing with a single credit.
On the topmost screen, you can also earn 100 for a combination of triple 7s and between 800 and 6,000x for combinations of red-and-gold crowns. Suffice to say, you can clean up in super-meter mode, if your luck is in.
Sadly, there are no wild or scatter symbols in Old Timer.
Old Timer acts as a reliquary of past glories for the casino industry. It is fun, flashy and potentially lucrative, with a clever super-meter mode that can boost your winnings. If you’re feeling a familiar pang of nostalgia for the good old days, boost up Old Timer and take a shot at glory.
