Hogan knows best
Last night, I found myself in an interesting position. Having never been a fan of wrestling, or even watched a single match, I somehow found myself emotional while watching Netflix’s Hulk Hogan: Real American.
The documentary gives a detailed account of the rise of two-time WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan, real name Terry Bollea. Framed around an interview with an aged and sentimental Hogan just three months prior to his death in 2025, the series paints a complicated picture of a world icon.
from a niche sideshow into a mainstream event with millions of fans
While he may have come into disrepute later in life, for various reasons, the emotional effect came from a retrospective glance at Hogan’s life. During a ten-bell salute to commemorate Hogan, a series of images documented the vital impact he had on the sport he loved, turning it from a niche sideshow into a mainstream event with millions of fans across the globe.
At the VegasSlotsOnline News office, this got us thinking… what is the online slot version of Hulk Hogan? There was one single iconic game that we all agreed had the same impact as the star, and that slot was released by Microgaming in 2006.
Fighting at Fort Myers
Hogan’s first documented professional debut was in Fort Myers, Florida in 1977 for Championship Wrestling of Florida. There, he came up against Brian Blair at a small territory wrestling show, very far from the major arena’s he would come to sell-out later in his career. It was also well documented that Hogan wasn’t particularly good. He was a spectacle at 6 feet 7 inches tall, but his initial performances were far from perfect.
Meanwhile, wrestling as a whole wasn’t selling out huge arenas anywhere. The sport was organized under a territory system with different promoters across the US. The pinnacle of the sport at that time was the WWWF, which centered around shows at the Madison Square Garden. The biggest bout around that time was between Billy Graham and Bruno Sammartino, drawing a crowd of just over 26,000.
it was the first online slot game available on the internet
If we equate this to slots, then we are in the period of Cash Splash, another slot from Microgaming. Released in 1998, the game was the one that started it all in a literal sense, since it was the first online slot game available on the internet. It proved that real-money slots weren’t just for casino floors, they could be moved into your living room.
As a game though, Cash Splash left a lot to be desired. It had a basic three-reel format, unlike today’s 5×3 slots with cascading grids and Megaways. In that way, it was a lot closer to a traditional land-based fruit machine. It also had just a few paylines, minimal bonus mechanics, and no real story or theme immersion.

When Hogan fought in the 1970s, he wasn’t even known as Hogan yet. He was Terry Boulder. And in a way, Cash Splash was Terry Boulder too. It offered a spectacle, the chance to win a progressive jackpot in the comfort of your own home, but it was still figuring itself out. Online slot gambling hadn’t yet added what it needed to draw in the real crowds.
Adding “The Hulk”
It wasn’t until around 1979 that Hogan actually added “The Hulk” to his name. He eventually became the prototype Hulk Hogan, the first iteration of the star that would eventually change the sport forever. At this point, Terry “The Hulk” Boulder was wrestling often in Memphis, which was one of the best places for stars to test themselves. He was performing to smaller town shows, usually up to 2,000 people max, and still working to perfect his technique.
Importantly, Hogan began “dropping the leg” around this period. It was his iconic finishing move that saw him jump into the air and land with his leg oustretched on his opponent before getting them in a hold for the final count. The move was not yet fully developed, but it was on the way to becoming iconic.
the game helped define the modern five-reel slot era
In the world of slots, Thunderstruck by Microgaming seems the most fitting comparison here. It was released in 2004, and was the first slot with a strong theme and solid visuals. Based around Norse mythology, the game helped define the modern five-reel slot era, replacing the more primitive slots which were based around fruit machines. People started to take notice of slots gaming, and it set the framework for what would come later.

Hulkamania explodes
It wasn’t until the 1980s that Hulk Hogan really took over. It began in 1983 when WWF owner Vince McMahon brought him to the organization after taking over the business, positioning him as the new face of the WWF expansion. In 1984, he really catapulted himself to stardom by defeating The Iron Sheik at Madison Square Garden to win the WWF Championship.
Let me tell you something, BROTHER”
Many see this as the beginning of Hulkamania, when his superhero physique, charisma, and slogans became iconic. “Let me tell you something, BROTHER,” was repeated by little kids all over the world, and replicas of his famous headbands were selling out in stores. He routinely headlined major indoor arenas, selling out 20,000 seats with ease. In Hulkamania’s biggest moment, Westlemania III, he helped to sell out 93,000+ seats at the Pontiac Silverdome.
Mega Moolah is the slot we have picked as the most clear comparison to Hulk in his prime. Released in 2006, it has a five-reel, three-row slot, so a fairly traditional layout, and uses a wildlife theme. All of this is reliatively simple, but it is the jackpot system underneath that makes it stand out. A small portion of every spin contributes to a growing prize pool that can randomly trigger at any point. It quickly got a reputation as a “millionaire maker,” with big wins through the Mega Jackpot making headlines and drawing attraction to the online slot.

Just like Hogan, the Micrograming slot took an existing product and made it explode into mainstream culture. Mega Moolah was like a Hulk Hogan match, all about creating anticipation, tension, and then offering the chance of one explosive payoff in the form of a jackpot that could be won on any spin. It didn’t just succeed as a game, it helped online slots become what they are today. Jackpots became a dominant design model, with volatility increasing, and this drew in the crowds.
WWF wouldn’t be what it is today without Hogan paving the way, and the same can be said for Mega Moolah.
