A franchise flagship becomes a testing ground for a new sub-brand

Pragmatic Play has adapted one of its best-known slots for a newly created casual-player label. The Gates of Olympus name is the opening move in a wider portfolio strategy, not a standalone release.

Gates of Olympus POP is the first established franchise title adapted for Pragmatic Play POP, a casual-player sub-brand that replaced the Fat Panda studio just one month ago. Pragmatic Play launched its POP sub-brand on July 31, 2026, retiring the Fat Panda label it had introduced in March 2025.

The significance lies less in the game itself than in what it signals. Pragmatic Play is now attaching its most recognizable intellectual property directly to a simplified format aimed at casual and beginner players. Gates of Olympus, launched in February 2021, is among the most widely distributed slots in the online market, which makes it a deliberate choice to lead the sub-brand’s franchise rollout.

Pragmatic Play has signaled that several of its most-played franchises, including Gates of Olympus, Sweet Bonanza, and Starlight Princess, would receive the condensed-format treatment. Gates of Olympus POP is simply the first of those adaptations to go live.

What changes when Olympus goes casual

The reworked title keeps the recognizable furniture of the original. You still get the Greek mythology setting and the Zeus character, but the layout and math are rebuilt for a different audience. The game retains the setting and character of the original Gates of Olympus, which launched in February 2021 on a high-volatility 6×5 grid, but reconfigures the core mechanics for a more accessible, mobile-oriented experience.

The clearest structural shift is the move to a portrait-format 3×5 grid built for mobile screens. Add to that a tumbling-reel engine and accumulating multiplier symbols. The original’s defining trait was its high volatility; the POP version is positioned around accessibility and faster, more intuitive play, which is the core distinction between the two.

It preserves a headline-grabbing top payout

The one genuinely new element is a POP symbol mechanic layered onto the bonus trigger. If the bonus round triggers alongside one, two, or three POP symbols, an additional 50x, 500x, or 25,000x prize is awarded respectively, giving the feature a maximum single-trigger payout of 25,000x the bet.

That instant-prize layer matters. It preserves a headline-grabbing top payout while the underlying game is otherwise softened for casual players. It lets Pragmatic Play market a large maximum win without retaining the punishing volatility that defined the original.

The Fat Panda pivot and where the strategy goes next

The POP sub-brand is best understood as a rebrand of an existing experiment rather than a fresh idea. Pragmatic Play POP was announced on July 31, 2026 as a rebrand of Fat Panda, the internal studio the company had launched in March 2025. Fat Panda was conceived as a deliberate counterpoint to Pragmatic Play’s core catalogue of high-volatility, feature-heavy slots, targeting casual and beginner players through simpler mechanics, higher hit frequencies, and softer visual design. The POP rebrand carries forward that philosophy while attaching it directly to the parent company’s name and its most recognisable intellectual property.

That last point is the strategic shift. Fat Panda operated at arm’s length as a separate studio identity; POP folds the same casual philosophy under the Pragmatic Play brand and its franchises. Rather than building casual titles from scratch, the studio is now channeling its most valuable IP through the format. It’s a lower-risk route to reaching casual audiences with names players already recognize.

The pipeline reinforces the direction. The initial POP rollout is scheduled to adapt several of the company’s best-performing franchises, including Sweet Bonanza, Zeus vs Hades, Starlight Princess, and Mahjong Wins, alongside two original releases, Triple Hop Pots and Pelican Payday. Existing Fat Panda titles have been ported to the new sub-brand as part of the transition.

Gates of Olympus POP brings a fresh approach to one of our most recognisable franchise

Pragmatic Play framed the launch around that dual audience. Sharon McHugh, Director of Public Relations at Pragmatic Play, said: “Gates of Olympus POP brings a fresh approach to one of our most recognisable franchises, reimagining the formula through a streamlined format designed for fast-paced, intuitive gameplay.” McHugh added that the title targets both new and returning players in the series.

For operators, the practical takeaway is distribution and reach. Gates of Olympus POP is available now across Pragmatic Play’s partner operator network, distributed via the company’s single application programming interface integration. That means the casual variant slots into existing operator lobbies alongside the original without additional integration work, giving Pragmatic Play a low-friction way to test whether a softened, mobile-first version of a marquee franchise can broaden its player base.
