Belmont Park in New York is the site of the latest string of horse fatalities in US racing. Two horses died within 24 hours of one another close to the top of the stretch on the turf course after suffering the same injuries.

The New York State Gaming Commission, Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, and the New York Racing Association are all reviewing the circumstances of Mashnee Girl’s fall on Sunday at Belmont Park. The five-year-old mare was euthanized after suffering a serious leg injury.

The horse’s trainer was Mark Hennig, who had another of his stable pass away on Saturday in the race following the Belmont Stakes. Excursionniste also had to be put down due to a bad ankle fracture. Four horses have died across 214 races since the beginning of the spring-summer season at Belmont Park on May 4.

The latest fatalities come not long after the famed Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, decided to close down its track for the remainder of the current season after the deaths of a dozen horses. The authorities are still in the dark about the reasons for the uptick in fatalities and investigations are ongoing.
