MGM China Holdings, owner and operator of MGM Macau and MGM Cotai, has issued a statement to warn the public about a deepfake video of company’s Chairperson and Executive Director, Pansy Ho. The video, generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), supposedly “falsely promotes a fictitious investment plan, with unfounded promises of hundredfold returns.”
The video was neither created nor released by the Company or Ms. Pansy Ho.”
“MGM China reiterates that neither the Company nor Ms. Pansy Ho has at any time been involved in, authorized, or endorsed the purported investment plan featured in the deepfake video,” the company explained. “The video was neither created nor released by the Company or Ms. Pansy Ho. MGM China condemns these acts of impersonation and misrepresentation in the strongest terms and reserves all legal rights against the parties involved, to protect our rights and interests.”
At time of writing, we were unable to find the video anywhere online.
As AI becomes more sophisticated, fake videos are becoming tougher to detect. In this case, even if one couldn’t figure it out visually, a big clue would have been the outsized return on investment that the AI version of Ms. Ho promised. A “too good to be true” scenario.
MGM China provided sound advice in that regard: “MGM China cautions the public and the media to exercise the utmost vigilance and verify information through official channels. The Company advises against believing in or disseminating such fraudulent content to avoid potential legal and financial consequences.”
The company added that it provides business updates on its official platforms.
