US Gaming Giants Join Forces to Run Brazil State Lottery for 15 Years

  • SG and Brightstar’s SPL firm were granted the 15-year lottery concession

Two US gaming giants have joined forces to win a 15-year contract to run a new state lottery in São Paulo, Brazil. 

US-based lottery and gaming brand Scientific Games (SG) and a subsidiary of NYSE-listed Brightstar Lottery PLC announced on Monday they had formed SP Loterias SPE SA (SPL) after an agreement with the São Paulo state government.

The joint venture SPL is licensed to run the state lottery, one of the largest in Latin America, for the foreseeable future. Trade media has called the move a “historic moment in the Brazilian lottery industry.”

SPL will run lottery games, including instant and passive lotteries, e-Instant, and drawing-based games, across retail and digital platforms. According to iGaming Times, the venture is expected to provide entertainment to gamblers in Brazil’s financial capital, while also providing a “lucrative revenue stream for investments in public health” in the city, and enforcing São Paulo’s policy of linking gaming to social benefits.

According reports, SG and Brightstar will pool their talents to create a “a seamless, integrated lottery ecosystem” that will enable users to access lottery products digitally and via retail.

Brightstar’s Chief Operating Officer of Italy and International Lottery Operations Marco Tasso said his firm was pleased to introduce “new and exciting lottery options to the 44 million residents of São Paulo.”

SG’s President of International Operations Michael Conforti, meanwhile, added that the tie-up was “the result of months of collaboration to ensure that this new state lottery in Brazil meets the needs of all stakeholders.”
