UFC star Conor McGregor is certainly not averse to courting controversy. The Irish fighter is known for his loud mouth, and now he is turning that talent to politics.
Last Thursday, McGregor took to X with a video announcing that he will run to become the next President of Ireland. The video focused largely on the topic of immigration, something which McGregor opposes. Speaking of the effects, he said: “Our tourism has sharply declined while danger on our streets has risen.”
McGregor urged Irish citizens to contact their local county councillors to ask them to nominate him to run:
With the fighter’s determination to run for Presidency now clear, sportsbooks have provided the first odds on McGregor securing the big seat in Ireland. Irish bookmaker Boylesports has him at +5000 to win the next Presidency, giving him a 2% shot.
No one will fight harder for the people of Ireland than Conor McGregor!”
Perhaps boosting his chances, even Elon Musk has endorsed the loudmouth MMA star. The same day McGregor released his video, Musk posted to X: “No one will fight harder for the people of Ireland than Conor McGregor!” Much like the fighter, billionaire Musk is using his notoriety to build up opposition to immigration.
McGregor is also a big supporter of US President Donald Trump, even visiting the 47th President in the White House. In a video from March this year, now shared widely on social media, McGregor commends the President on his “inspiring” work rate while considering a map of the newly renamed Gulf of America.
