The number of people arriving at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas from Canada was down 65.6% in June compared to the same period in 2024. 86,698 people arrived during the month across Flair Airlines, Air Canada, and WestJet, down from 132,109 the previous year.
Canadians spent about $3.6bn in Southern Nevada in 2024
These figures are concerning to casinos in the city, as Canadians spent about $3.6bn in Southern Nevada in 2024, according to research from UNLV Economic Professor Stephen Miller.
While the high prices that people have to pay in Las Vegas for even the simplest goods and services puts some people off visiting, MGM Resorts International President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle said in a quarterly results call earlier this month that there’s a correlation with the launch of President Trump’s trade war. He pointed out that Canadian visitor numbers started dropping at that time and haven’t rebounded.
Similarly, Caesars Entertainment CEO Thomas Reeg said that softer demand from international visitors, especially Canadians, caused disappointing results in its second quarter.
Some are now calling this trend the “Trump slump,” with many people in Canada unhappy with the US president’s disparaging remarks about making its neighbor the 51st US state and the implementation of heavy tariffs.
