Current Notts County defender Lewis Macari is facing allegations of violating the English Football Association’s betting rules.

The 23-year-old allegedly placed 354 wagers from February 2020 to December 2022 when he was with Stoke City as a youth player. The Association’s rules strictly prohibit players from betting on soccer games, even if they have no direct link with either team.

Lou Macari, a midfielder who played 329 times for Manchester United in the 1970s and 1980s, is his grandfather. He was also the subject of an investigation over gambling-related offenses. In this instance, Macari was the manager of Swindon when he bet on his team to lose to Newcastle United in a 1989 FA Cup clash.

Lewis Macari has appeared 61 times for Notts County of the EFL League 2; the club says that it will support him throughout the investigation and won’t comment again on the matter.

Macari is the latest EFL player to face an FA investigation. Just last week, Ryan Bowman received a 42-month ban after admitting to making 6,397 wagers.
