In addition to being a popular YouTube and Twitch streamer, DrLupo is also an established chess player, with a 650 rating. He is currently in the middle of controversy as he was removed from an online chess tournament with a $100,000 prize pool.
The game in question was against another YouTuber named Wolfey on Chess.com. Streaming the match live to his audience, DrLupo made a bad mistake early in the match before completing the remainder of the action with near-perfect moves, causing people to question the legitimacy of his decisions as they were deemed to be above his skill level.
Viewers could see him occasionally look at another screen while playing, and some accused him of cheating. DrLupo initially denied the claims and said he voluntarily withdrew from the PogChamps 6 tournament despite Chess.com saying he was kicked for a “fair play violation.”
later backtracked and said he got some help from his chat
The content creator later backtracked and said he got some help from his chat and that he should have known better, as external assistance is not allowed in chess. DrLupo proceeded to issue a full apology for his behavior, labeling his behavior “dumb as f**k” and saying that he hurt a lot of people:
Not everyone was buying that DrLupo just got help from his chat; some alleged that he used an external program or AI engine to tell him the best chess moves to make each time.
