One of the big campaign promises President Donald Trump made to the people in Nevada, a valuable swing state in the election, was to end the taxation of tips. He reiterated this pledge during a rally in Las Vegas in January.
city with the biggest concentration of tipped workers nationwide
More than 100 days after the start of his second term, Las Vegas workers are still waiting for these cuts. As the city with the biggest concentration of tipped workers nationwide, it’s a major talking point in Sin City. That’s why Culinary Union Local 226 is keeping an eye on proceedings to ensure that the president actually makes some changes, saying that members want “real action on this issue, not promises.”
In a statement to CBS News, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Trump is working with Congress to get the change over the line. Two bills are currently in the committee stage, one of which would end federal income tax on tips and another that would end the $2.13 sub-wage and introduce the uniform $7.25 level, as well as cut the federal obligation.
Workers will just have to wait and see if one of Trump’s biggest promises actually turns into policy.
