The Tropicana Atlantic City is facing a real problem as the city’s homeless seek shelter from the winter cold.
Chris Downey, the casino’s Vice President of Casino Operations, has explained security are evicting around 20 people per day from the building. “We’re really fighting a rising tide here,” he said over the weekend. ”We evicted 13 Friday morning alone.”

Downey said that the homeless people are making their way into the building through a variety of entrances, including fire stairs. They often come back despite police helping to remove them from the property.
Atlantic City have waged war on their homeless population over the past year. In September, they dismantled a notorious homeless encampment beneath its Boardwalk. Jarrod Barnes, City Director of Health and Human Services, described it as an illicit complex with “rooms and heaters and electricity and real beds.”
The city council is also considering a law which would stop people from sleeping in public spaces. It follows a decision by the US Supreme Court to allow municipalities to ban homeless encampments if they choose.
