A powerful position

A gaming manager at The Star Sydney who borrowed over AU$7,000 (US$4,978) from employees to feed her gambling addiction has lost her job and received a ban from the casino. She will also no longer have the option of working in the industry after the province’s gaming regulator revoked her license.

borrowed thousands of dollars from her employees

Minh Nguyen served as a Casino Special Employee at the property in charge of supervising gaming tables and certain aspects of security at the venue. During her time in this role between 2020 and 2021, she borrowed thousands of dollars from her employees to fund her gambling habit.

Specific instances of borrowing money

In one instance, Nguyen allowed a worker to clock off early from their shift and offered them a lift home. While driving, Nguyen mentioned supposed family issues and preceded to ask the worker for AU$1,000 (US$711). This led to them stopping at an ATM in order to withdraw cash. It took a few months for the worker to get the money back after making numerous requests over the intervening period.

In another instance, Nguyen requested AU$3,000 (US$2,133) from a worker, promising to give it back inside of two months. After receiving AU$2,000 (US$1,422) from the employee, Nguyen only returned AU$1,000 (US$711) five months later.

Staff members who lent money to Nguyen reported that they were scared to talk about the matter and felt that they could not refuse their manager’s request.

Revoking her license

According to New South Wales (NSW) Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority chairman Philip Crawford, the regulatory body has revoked Nguyen’s license.

a lack of honesty and considerable lack of diligence”

In a statement regarding the matter, Crawford said: “The repeated nature of the contraventions indicates a lack of honesty and considerable lack of diligence or ability with respect to regulatory compliance.” He asserted that the regulator also intended to help her deal with her gambling addiction by revoking her license.

During an investigation into this matter, Nguyen denied the claims. She refuted that she was in a powerful position in the casino and able to leverage this in order to get money from certain staff members.
