Harrowing experience

A man was robbed at gunpoint shortly after winning $40,000 at an Illinois casino. Des Plaines police are currently investigating the armed robbery of Cordero Supe at about 2:30am on Tuesday. The 34-year-old had won $40,000 at Rivers Casino before two men robbed him of his cash in the casino’s parking garage.

The two robbers wore bandanas and were driving a blue four-door sedan. They pulled up beside the victim, jumped out, and pointed their guns at the man, ordering him to give them the cash.

He did not suffer any injuries during the ordeal.

In addition to the money, the robbers took the victim’s car keys and a mobile phone. Fortunately, Supe had another phone on him at the time that allowed him to get a photo of the car. He did not suffer any injuries during the ordeal.

Some regrets over the incident

Supe regrets that he took the winnings in cash instead of getting a check, as well as not asking the casino for a security escort. Supe has his suspicions that a woman who was hanging around him during the course of the night might have been an accomplice to the two attackers.

Rivers Casino is very close to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and is majority-owned by Churchill Downs and under the operation of Rush Street Gaming.

Talking to local media, Supe said: “There was a young lady that I saw, I said hello to. She stood behind me for about an hour, two hours. She knew exactly how much I had to the T.”

He went on to say that the men who attacked him told him to hand over a specific sum of money, which “looked real suspicious.”

Additional security measures

Supe also believes that the casino should have done more in order to protect him. He is currently a black card member at the casino, having spent hundreds of thousands of dollars at the property. Following the robbery, Supe ran back into the casino and informed the security of what took place.

This is not an isolated incident, with numerous other armed robberies taking place at Rivers Casino in recent months. On August 4, three armed robberies took place in the parking garage in the early hours of the morning.

Rivers Casino has handed over the surveillance footage to police to aid in the investigation. The property has also revealed that it has been upping its number of external security patrols during the past year or so. In a statement, the casino said that its top priority is the security and safety of its team members and guests. The statement said: “Rivers has indefinitely increased exterior security patrols 24/7 as part of a property-wide enhancement of additional security and surveillance measures.”
