The Rio Hotel & Casino Las Vegas was the scene of a tragic murder-suicide over the weekend.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) the incident involved a mother and daughter visiting Vegas for “a dance or cheer competition.”
Rio security discovered the bodies at 2:30pm on Sunday after receiving worried calls from the pair’s loved ones. According to LVMPD Lieutenant Robert Price, investigators believe the “mother shot her daughter inside the hotel room, then shot herself.”

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the LVMPD had fielded a welfare check call earlier on Sunday morning “for a mother in her 30s and her preteen daughter” staying at the off-Strip resort-casino.
Lt. Price said Metro officers knocked on the hotel door for over 15 minutes, but after hearing no response, informed Rio security and left.
Clues as to why the murder-suicide took place could be contained in a note Price said police discovered at the scene. While Price did not divulge what was written, he stated that the LVMPD is still investigating why the mother killed her child.
Price added that the case “is a sad and tragic incident, and our hearts go out to the family.”
