The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reportedly removed gambling references from its laws as it gets ready for a new era of commercial gaming. Greenberg Traurig first reported that the new Civil Transactions Law will not include betting or gambling provisions once it comes into effect on June 1, 2026.

change will clear a structured system for regulating gambling in the region

Articles in the current federal laws specifically mention these activities. This change will clear a structured system for regulating gambling in the region. The General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority was set up in September 2023 to oversee the sector. This body will be responsible for addressing any issues related to the space.

This follows the launch of online gambling in late 2025. Play 971, a site available in the region, offers sports betting and casino games like roulette and blackjack. Each emirate has its own rules governing who can access the platform.

Work on the region’s first casino is also well underway. The Wynn Al Marjan Island is set to open next year.
