The NCAA approved a rule change in October that would allow college athletes and athletic department staff to bet on professional sports. Now the organization must do a U-turn after two-thirds of Division I schools voted on Friday to rescind the measure.
every Division I school had a 30-day window to object to the proposal
The rule change was supposed to come into effect on November 1. However, a rarely used loophole meant that every Division I school had a 30-day window to object to the proposal. The vote got the necessary two-thirds majority, so there won’t be any betting on professional sports for anyone involved in the three top divisions of college sports.
The decision follows several high-profile betting-related scandals in the NBA, MLB, and UFC. The NCAA has also been dealing with its own issues. Just two weeks ago, it revoked the eligibility of six college basketball players over sports betting allegations.
