One of the ways that sportsbooks remain so profitable is by limiting or completely banning people who consistently win. A New York lawmaker is now trying to give these sharp bettors a better chance by introducing a new bill that would prevent sportsbooks from curtailing winning accounts.

Assemblymember Alex Bores has sponsored A9125 and the legislation is currently in front of the Racing and Wagering Committee. The bill would only let operators ban bettors if their activity is suspicious or if they are exhibiting signs of problematic gambling.

operators would have to give them electronic notice within 24 hours to explain the reasoning

If someone does meet one of those two parameters, the bill says that operators would have to give them electronic notice within 24 hours to explain the reasoning and the duration of the curtailment. This message would be accompanied by a phone number for a problem gambling helpline. A9125 won’t have a chance to get in front of the full legislature until January.

Similar conversations are taking place in Massachusetts. The state’s gambling regulator presented its research findings, revealing that 0.64% of bettors had been limited as of December 2024, the equivalent of over 13,000 people.
