Policewoman in India Attacked and Held Captive During Gambling Den Raid

Unnamed assailants attacked a policewoman and held her captive during a raid on an illegal gambling den in India. India Today reported the victim as Champabati Soren, Inspector-in-Charge of Talasari Marine Police Station in the Indian state of Odisha. Soren was leading a raid on an illegal gambling den in Odisha’s Balasore district on Sunday night.

According to media reports, Soren was attempting to shutter the den in the village of Udaypur but encountered resistance. This led to a physical confrontation during which the aggressors locked the policewoman inside the illegal establishment and left her patrol car driver wounded at the scene.

Police from a nearby department rescued both victims.

Authorities have detained approximately 20 suspects for questioning while deploying a platoon of police officers: “to maintain peace and order” in Udaypur. Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Odisha’s Jaleswar department Dilip Sahu stated police were “conducting a thorough inquiry, and appropriate action will be taken as per the law.”
