Basketball icon joins all-star cast

Jamie Foxx, Barry Sanders, Wayne Gretzky, and now perhaps the most multi-talented out of them all, National Basketball Association (NBA) legend Kevin Garnett, are among BetMGM’s all-star cast of brand ambassadors.

The NBA Hall of Famer, star of Uncut Gems, and all-round entrepreneur Garnett took to Twitter on October 21 to share his new appointment:

“The Big Ticket” Garnett will be pitchman for BetMGM’s forthcoming marketing campaigns, promotions, social media content, and fan events.

Garnett said he was “thrilled” to be working with the New Jersey-based sports betting giant and to share its insights with his fans. The 15-time NBA All-Star added that the collaboration was a “natural fit […] given our mutual desire to stay on top of the ever-changing sports business landscape.”

Boosting brand awareness

Garnett’s addition to its roster of brand ambassadors once again reveals BetMGM’s cognizance of the impact a high-profile personality can have on fan engagement and boosting brand awareness.

In an official news release, BetMGM’s chief revenue officer Matt Prevost highlighted Garnett’s appeal, saying:

Kevin Garnett brings a unique energy to everything he does, on and off the court.”

Garnett racked up 21 seasons in the NBA, starring for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Boston Celtics, and Brooklyn Nets. Besides winning multiple individual honors, he won the 2008 NBA Championship with the Celtics. Since retiring, the former basketball legend has blazed an entrepreneurial trail through the business world. He recently set up Gaming Society, an online platform that gives insight into betting from an athlete’s viewpoint.

Garnett has also made a big splash in the film industry, starring alongside Adam Sandler in the critically acclaimed 2019 film Uncut Gems. He also has a documentary, Anything is Possible, premiering on November 12 on Showtime.

Rebecca Evans, founder of sports marketing agency VOS Sport, says athletes make the ideal pitch-persons, being “role models, trendsetters, tastemakers and social influencers.” According to Evans, history has shown that they “can create connections between a brand and a consumer that are vital to long-term commercial success in modern business.”

BetMGM’s most astute appointment yet?

A multi-talented personality with such wide-ranging appeal, Garnett could prove to be BetMGM’s most astute brand ambassador appointment yet.

BetMGM got its pitchman ball rolling last year when it inked Grammy and Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx to star in The King of Sportsbooks brand campaign. Then, in February 2021, the sportsbook appointed National Football League (NFL) Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders as state brand ambassador for Michigan. Later in June, with its eye on potentially expanding into Canada, BetMGM co-opted the services of National Hockey League (NHL) all-time great Wayne Gretzky as brand ambassador.

Signing Garnett just as the 2021-22 NBA season tips off is perfect timing from BetMGM. Sports bettors can expect to see a lot of the former NBA legend, with Prevost saying: “We look forward to welcoming Kevin to the BetMGM family and working with him on a variety of fan-focused promotions.”
