The Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in China’s Zhejiang province has announced the execution by lethal injection of 11 members of a mafia family for running a $1.4bn illegal gambling scam operation in Myanmar.

The judicial body announced the executions of Ming Guoping and other Ming mafia family members in a statement on Thursday.

The Mings reportedly worked for a clan that ran the Myanmar town of Laukkai near the Chinese border and were accused in September of killing 14 Chinese citizens, running scam and gambling operations, illegal casinos, and trafficking drugs and prostitution since 2015.

Myanmar extradited the suspects back to China where they were sentenced to death in September, after Beijing had issued warrants for the Mings’ arrests in 2023 on suspicion of murder, illegal detention, and fraud, and began exerting political pressure on Myanmar.

While on death row, the convicted felons filed an appeal that was rejected by the Wenzhou court in November, according to the Asahi Shimbun.
