That one again
Journalists around the world are typing out “Drake Curse” again as the celebrity rapper took a major betting hit by backing Jake Paul against Anthony Joshua.
British boxer Joshua sent influencer Jake Paul’s jaw into the ether with a knockout blow in round six of the Friday night clash. Joshua, who mimed slicing Paul’s throat after a punishing victory, took to X with the quip “Netflix and chill”:
The bigger punchline for bettors is that Drake, who would have won $1.64m if Paul had overcome the heavy odds and beat Joshua, lost another big one.
Drake had bet $200,000 on the YouTuber to win.
Champ leads taunts
After Friday night’s humbling of Paul, the inescapable ‘Drake curse’ theory has been reignited by the former World Heavyweight Champion. Joshua told ESPN he had banned Drake from his backstage area because “he knows he shouldn’t be around him.”
“You know about the Drake curse? It’s real, though,” Joshua stated.
Paul took to X Saturday morning to share an X-ray revealing Joshua’s KO had broken his jaw in two places:
As merciless as Joshua was with Paul, so fans were with Drake. “If it wasn’t for the Drake Curse, what could have been,” one social media user joked. Another added on X: “In all u do don’t ever let Drake bet on you, the Drake curse is real.”
One X user summed it up, however, with: “The Drake curse gotta be real man.”
Aftermath
While Paul did well to last so long, he was the odds-on favorite to lose both the bout and the fashion stakes, after Joshua was gifted a $400k diamond necklace ahead of the fight.
The other big loser is on something of a roll, after dropping $300,000 backing Carlos Alcaraz to beat Jannick Sinner in the September US Open final, and losing another $250,000 on the same day after the Bills beat the Ravens 41-40.
Drake took to Instagram Stories just before the fight to tell Paul: “Jakeyyyyy boy. Lock tf in.”
