Australia’s national broadcaster has dropped one of the sports-mad country’s favorite sons, the fast bowling great Glenn McGrath, over his ties with iGaming firm Bet365.

Baggy Green legend McGrath’s name had appeared in promotional material as a commentator for the grudge cricket series between England and Australia that starts Friday. In a statement, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) confirmed it had “mutually parted ways” with McGrath for the Ashes series.

Taking to X with a headline stating the ex-fast bowler has “lost his ABC Radio job,” former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison defended McGrath, citing his charity work:

According to the Guardian, McGrath’s agents told the ABC of his upcoming partnership with UK-based online gambling giant Bet365 before the decision to part ways was made.

we look forward to seeing Glenn around the grounds”

ABC policy forbids staff from partnering with betting firms, leaving the national broadcaster not much choice other than to gently wish the cricketer adieu: “We look forward to seeing Glenn around the grounds throughout the series and would welcome working with him in the future.”
