Rumors are circulating on social media that the Culinary Health Fund was the possible victim of a cyberattack. Las Vegas Locally reported the news on Tuesday regarding Nevada’s biggest union-sponsored health provider:

Thousands of people received a text message on Monday night from the Culinary Health Fund, which covers more than 145,000 people in Nevada including many casino workers in Las Vegas, warning them about a potentially fraudulent message they might have received.

It looks like a standard phishing attack where scammers try to trick people into believing they are owed money, before asking them to reply with personal banking information. The fraudulent text claimed that the recipient was owed $573.91.

its customer service office was closed on Tuesday for Veterans Day

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Culinary Health Fund was the victim of a cyberattack. It could be a breach at a third-party messaging provider, and messages were then sent from the real number. The issue came at a bad time for the organization, as its customer service office was closed on Tuesday for Veterans Day.

Nevada is no stranger to cyberattacks. Over the past few years, big names like MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Boyd Gaming have also been affected.
