Fresh details about the illegal gambling scandal that rocked the NBA world last week are constantly coming to light. One eye-catching piece of information that emerged on Tuesday was that Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier was facing an $8m tax lien from the IRS in 2023, the same year that he allegedly manipulated an NBA game.

this lien would only happen after the taxpayer received several past-due notices

ESPN obtained county clerk records showing the $8.2m federal income tax lien in Florida’s Broward County in November 2023. According to a tax attorney in Florida that ESPN spoke with, this lien would only happen after the taxpayer received several past-due notices. The 31-year-old Rozier was in the middle of a four-year, $96m contract at the time.

Rozier was arrested last week for allegedly telling bettors that he would exit a March 2023 game early, allowing them to win player prop bets. His friend Enior Laster allegedly sold this information to bettors for approximately $100,000. Both individuals are facing conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to commit wire fraud charges. The NBA placed Rozier on leave after the news of the scandal broke last week.
