Uttar Pradesh Police (UPP) in India have arrested a 20-year-old man addicted to the globally popular online gambling game Aviator. He is accused of stealing his mother’s jewellery, and then killing her. According to UPP, Nikhil Yadav was addicted to online gambling, with the crash game created by casino games developer Spribe a particular favorite of his.

Yadav reportedly killed his mother Renu Yadav on October 3 by stabbing her with a screwdriver and hitting her with a propane cylinder. His reason? Yadav told police he suspected Renu might have seen him in the act of stealing, a fear that drove the accused to kill his mother and flee the scene.

Driving the accused to commit what UPP Detective Commissioner of Police (DCP) South, Nipun Agarwal, termed a “heinous act” was his addiction to online gambling “and high-interest instant loan apps.”

DCP Agarwal said Nikhil had blown all his money on online gambling and then took several instant loans including ₹25,000 ($281), ₹2,600 ($29), and ₹2,000 ($22) on MPOKKET, Flash Wallet, and Ram Fincorp apps, respectively.

Agarwhal stated the “apps allegedly began blackmailing” Nikhil over his debts.

The police report added that Aviator “is addictive (quick decisions, high risk-reward) to lure young people into debt traps and steal money.” A pioneer of the social crash games genre, Aviator was also linked to the suicide of a police officer earlier this year in Zimbabwe, a country where Aviator fever is reportedly “drawing in thousands of gamblers.”
